These four Supreme Court justices do not believe the Constitution means what it says.
We know this now even more than we knew it yesterday or the day before that.
What happened today was a decision was handed down by the Supreme Court upholding birthright citizenship to virtually all children born in this country, which is embedded in the Constitution.
While we cannot do anything about guns, because of the second amendment, SCOTUS decided it was just fine and dandy to rethink with its supermajority conservative panel whether someone who is born in the United States is actually a citizen of the United States.
We’ve seen what that conservative majority is willing to do to immigrants when they ruled 6-3 that temporary protected status can be removed by a president on a whim.
Up until this morning, we didn’t have any idea the U.S. was one vote away from deporting people born in the United States of America.
The question was brought to the Supremes because president donald j. felon*, that noted constitutional scholar who has never read the Constitution, doesn’t believe birthright citizenship as written in the 14th Amendment is guaranteed and issued an executive order barring it for “babies born in the U.S. to parents who either entered the country illegally or who are living and working here legally with temporary visas,” NPR’s Nina Totenberg reported.
The EO, issued on the grifter’s first day back in office, was never put into effect because, as Totenberg said, “every lower court judge who reviewed it concluded, in the words of one judge, that it was ‘blatantly unconstitutional’.”
That certainly begs the question as to why the Supremes wanted to waste their time on a question that lower courts said wasn’t constitutional.
Take another look at the names at the top of this column. My guess is that they wanted to help the orange makeup man “white-ify” the country.
Those four men, sometimes accompanied by Roberts and Barrett, are more than willing to bend their views of the Constitution to favor the felon-in-chief and help him enact the christian nationalism of Stephen “Temu Goebbels” Miller.
Yes, Kavanaugh voted to uphold birthright citizenship but he actually wrote a dissent to Roberts’ opinion offering a way for Congress to enact legislation that establishes exceptions to birthright citizenship. Once again, thank you, Sen. Susan Collins.
I realize that there have been calls for impeachment of a couple of Supremes. I’m dubious that could happen even if the blue wave takes over both the Senate and the House.
Anyone seriously running for Congress or the presidency needs to stress the importance of — at the least — expanding the number of justices to the Supreme Court and setting term limits.
Thomas was appointed by President George H.W. Bush and took his place on the bench in 1991.
That is more than 34 years. Hell, the average life expectancy when the U.S. was founded was between 30 and 40 years.
Bottom line is that we need to end the out-of-control Supreme Court, and that begins with the midterms this November.
